When do desk workers most need a break?
Short answer: During the afternoon slump. In the SparklingTreat Desk Break Survey of 163 US desk workers, 57% said the afternoon slump is when they most feel the need to reset, well ahead of midday (24%), right after lunch (10%) and the morning (2%). Most people also wait too long: 66% take a break only after losing focus or getting stuck.

What this means for a team
- Protect a few minutes in mid-afternoon. Don't schedule back-to-back meetings straight through it.
- Encourage breaks before focus runs out, at natural pause points such as finishing a task. 45% of those asked named that as the most natural moment for a reset.
- Keep it short. 94% found the idea of a break under 2 minutes appealing.
What it won't fix
If people are exhausted by mid-afternoon every day, look at workload and meeting load first. A short break helps people get through a demanding day. It doesn't make the day less demanding.
